March 28 2024 – Measure the height of a tree
Gather the group together at the starting point with helpers and assistants. Introduce children to area and give a briefing on the topic and activity. Discuss health and safety issues and give advice on hazards and expectations of the group. Introduce children to the topic and outline through a group discussion how trees grow and the importance of trees. The class teacher will decide which trees will be surveyed using ribbon around them and record tree location on map during the survey. The tree survey will then be undertaken using the worksheet to record information on trees.
1) Tree details- Identify using tree ID chart
2) Tree girth – Measure the trunk at approximately 1m from ground
3) Tree age –Measure the girth in cm and divide by 2.5
4) 4) Height of a tree – Measure by slowly walking away from the tree, bend over and look between your legs. Repeat until you can see both the top and bottom of tree from looking between your legs. Measure the distance back to the tree and this is the height of the tree.
