This week’s session focused on Measures. The children searched the Forest School site and found things that were longer than their arm, smaller than their little finger, taller than themselves or bigger than their head. They then worked in pairs to complete some measuring tasks – measuring each other using hand spans and footsteps. There was lots of discussion around why some people who were the same height, ended up with the same number of ‘handspans’, and discussion about how to ensure it a fair activity and we were measuring accurately. The same pairs then found items to use as markers, started on a spot and counted footsteps before leaving their marker. Their partner then left from the same starting spot and completed the same number of footsteps. Again, there was lots of discussion about how someone might end up in at the same marker or not, and why this might be.
As usual, the session ended with some free play, before leaving no trace and returning to school.
