4/6/26 – Matchbox Collecting

P7 visited Six Mile Water River Park to take part in a miniature nature challenge. After discussing the variety of plants and materials found on the forest floor, the children worked in pairs and were given an empty matchbox. Their task was to search the area and collect as many different natural items as possible that would fit inside their box.

Once back at the base area, the children sorted and categorised their findings, comparing the different leaves, seeds, twigs and other treasures they had discovered. They discussed the diversity of the natural environment and shared their collections with their peers. At the end of the session, the class reflected on which items were most common, which were the hardest to find and what they had learned about the forest floor.
