Sticks – Children were asked to gather a variety of sticks to make their names. They were encouraged to find their own space to create their names. They gathered a variety of sticks and discussed shapes and which letter would suit each stick. Some children were frustrated with the s shape and asked of they could use other objects they sound to make the s. They gathered wild flowers and leaves and molded into the letter they wanted. When children were finished we had to hunt for the names and find everyone’s names. They then extended this to making their spellings and key words. The children practiced making the sound of the week. They discovered that the sticks were hard to see on the grass – camouflage was discussed. The children asked to use some tarpaulins to make the sticks stand out more.
