During today’s session, we took a little longer for the whistle game and encouraged the children to go off and explore all parts of the site. There were some real-time opportunities to teach about adhering to the boundary flags as our youngest children learn to navigate the rules of Forest School, and it was encouraging to hear their older classmates reminding them, “We have to stay on this side of the flag.” The children love to listen out for the 2 different teacher whistles and are fabulous at returning to the correct teacher. We changed it up a little and called the children to us in different areas of the site, to allow time for individuals to share interesting things they had found or to show off what they had been doing. As always, we incorporated time for free play. The mud kitchens were popular as ever and the variety of ‘baked goods’ on offer was most appealing! We finished the session by ‘leaving no trace’ and some children were chosen to collect in the boundary flags and return them to our outdoor storage container. This provided an opportunity to highlight the correct way to carry sticks to keep ourselves and others safe.
