Today’s Forest School session encouraged curiosity, scientific thinking, and real‑world connection as pupils began an investigation linked to our new thematic topic, What a Load of Rubbish. Learners buried a selection of materials — including fruit, vegetables, metal, and plastic — to explore how different items decompose or change over time. This hands‑on enquiry allowed children to make predictions, pose questions, and consider the environmental impact of everyday materials.
The site quickly became muddy and water‑filled due to recent weather, creating additional opportunities for sensory exploration and spontaneous learning. Many pupils used the conditions to investigate water movement, sinking and floating, and even enjoyed some imaginative “fishing” during free play. These moments of child‑led discovery supported problem‑solving, creativity, and physical development.
Through this activity, children deepened their understanding of how human actions and natural processes are interconnected. The session also supported wider curriculum learning by reinforcing concepts related to waste, sustainability, materials, and environmental responsibility.
Overall, today’s investigation encouraged scientific observation, teamwork, and a growing awareness of our relationship with the world around us — all core elements of both Forest School practice and our new topic journey.
