16/12/25 – Early Man Fire Lighting

P5 ventured down to our Forest School Activity Zone today to try to light some fires. They have been investigating the science behind lighting a fire as part of their ‘Early Man’ topic. In this session they began by hearing the fire safety rules and discussed why it was so important for Early People to have access to fire. They then split into pairs and used flint strikers and cotton wool balls to attempt to light their own fires. We discussed what methods helped to light the cotton wool ball the quickest and what they thought might hinder this. P5 were then treated to a toasted marshmallow as a reward for all their hard work.
