14/11/25 – Identifying and Measuring Trees

P4 explored the characteristics of leaves and used their topic knowledge from their ‘Tremendous Trees’ topic (and leaf dials) to identify which trees they had fallen from. They explored different sizes colours and shapes and sorted the leaves based on a variety of categories. Children then worked in pairs to measure the height and width of a tree. The estimated the height using a stick and discussed units of measure. They then measured the diameter using a measuring tape. The class discussed how we can tell a trees age using the rings we can see when a tree is cut down. Lots of great discussion has and very beneficial for our topical knowledge and context.
