13th March 2025 Camouflage

P4 had the opportunity to visit our new Forest School area. The Gathering Circle is a great addition and we are very grateful to a local family for donating the logs to create a great seating area. This was only the 2nd time this class had enjoyed a Forest School session but they remembered about the boundary flags and the three rules of Forest School.

The children learned about camouflage by taking turns to disguise green, red and beige ‘worms’ for their ‘bird’ partner to find. There was lots of great discussion about colour, patterns, lines and animals who are good at camouflage to enable them to escape predators or to hunt prey. Afterwards the children enjoyed some free play within the boundary flags before the session ended. During this time the girls, in particular, seemed to be keen to dig and play with sticks and a few started counting the rings on the logs to see how old the tree was, without any prompting. After collecting the boundary flags we enjoyed a walk along the trail back up to school. The children asked lots of questions about the river and the island across the bridge on the way back to school, piquing interest in another area of our grounds to explore.

Most children had a great time and said they enjoyed trying to find the ‘worms’. A few children said they had an okay time either because it was hard to find the worms or because they were cold. We talked about what could make it better next time and they suggested they could zip up their coats or wear warmer clothes or a hat and gloves. They made sure to collect any wool that they had hidden that wasn’t found so that we continue to ‘leave no trace’.
