November 2025

Today’s session focused on introducing the children to safe fire‑lighting techniques in an outdoor learning environment. With support and guidance from NIFSA staff, we set up a designated fire area in the playground using a fire bowl and appropriate safety boundaries. Children were briefed on fire safety rules, safe positioning, and how to move around the fire circle responsibly.
Under close supervision, learners observed the process of preparing a fire using natural materials such as dry sticks and tinder. They discussed the “fire triangle” and what is needed to sustain a flame. Children showed curiosity as they watched the gradual build‑up of the fire and asked thoughtful questions about heat, fuel, and airflow.
Once the fire was established, children had the opportunity to toast marshmallows using extended sticks. This activity encouraged patience, coordination, and an understanding of how to manage risk safely. Learners practised sitting positions, controlled movements, and waiting for their turn, demonstrating respect for both the fire and their peers.
Throughout the session, NIFSA’s support helped reinforce safe practice and provided valuable modelling of woodland‑based fire skills. Children gained confidence in managing themselves around an open flame and showed real enjoyment in the sensory elements of the experience — warmth, smell, and the satisfaction of creating something edible.
This activity supported personal development, risk awareness, and responsible behaviour, while maintaining a strong connection to core Forest School principles in a school‑based setting.
