22 May 2025 – Building Waterproof Shelters (Forest School Club)
This is part of a four-week Forest School club.
Children were introduced to the Forest School area and the boundaries were set up. We then played a game of ‘Follow the Leader’ through the forest which allowed all children to initially explore the environment. This provided a great opportunity for creativity, going over, under, through and around objects within the boundaries. The children were then allocated into teams, combining abilities, classes and year groups.
The main activity was to create outdoor shelters that would provide shelter and protection from wind and rain. Shelter structures were to be solid, allowing the children to fit inside safely, while also withstanding the water test. Pupils used natural forest structures and bushes to enhance the safety and effectiveness of their shelter and also had access to bamboo canes, pegs and tarps.
When the groups had completed their shelter, the teachers tested them to assess their stability and water resistance.
