Activity Summary
Today the children took part in a Forest School session where they used Carroll diagrams to sort and classify natural objects. After a safety briefing and boundary check, pupils worked in small groups to collect items such as leaves, sticks, stones, pinecones, and seed pods from the woodland floor (avoiding live plants and habitats).
Each group received a large laminated Carroll diagram with two sorting criteria, such as:
Smooth / Not Smooth
Green / Not Green
Symmetrical / Not Symmetrical
Children discussed and decided which items belonged in each box, using careful observation and justification for their choices. Many pupils confidently explained their reasoning, showing developing scientific vocabulary. Some groups chose to create their own criteria and independently re‑organised their diagrams.
